Term Description

Tribal Transportation Program - 5311 (c)

A transportation funding program (under Section 5311) for federally recognized Indian Tribes and Alaska Native Villages (ANV) as identified by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Non-federally recognized Indian Tribes are eligible for Section 5311 funds, but not as eligible direct recipients and not under the Tribal Transportation Program. The amount allocated is based on the total amount of funding requested by all applicants. Approximately 25% of the total federal allocation is used for start-up grants. Funds may be used for capital and operating expenses. Planning is an eligible expense, but is limited to 15% of the grant award. In addition to funding under the Tribal Transit Program, states must continue to include tribes in the equitable distribution of Section 5311 funds. The Tribal Transit Program funds must not replace or reduce the funds tribes would normally be eligible to receive under 5311. FTA does not require a non-federal matching share for the Tribal Transit Program grants.
