An incorporated entity which was not established for the purpose of making a profit, but rather for charitable, educational, philanthropic, cultural, or humanitarian purposes and not commercially motivated for making money. Most, but not all, non-profits are exempt from federal corporate income taxes under Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. An organization need not be tax-exempt to be recognized and organized as a "non-profit" under state law. The non-profit status may or may not be a determining factor in a non-profit's eligibility for certain federal funds.
