National Highway System (NHS)

Significant rural and urban roads serving major population centers, international border crossings, intermodal transportation facilities, and major travel destinations. The NHS includes the Interstate System, other urban and rural principal arterials, highways that provide motor vehicle access between the NHS and major intermodal transportation facilities, the defense strategic highway network, and strategic highway network connectors. The National Highway System provides funding for a wide range of transportation activities such as fringe and corridor parking facilities, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, carpool and vanpool projects, and public transportation facilities in NHS corridors where they would be cost effective and improve the levels of service. It also includes funding for environmental restoration and pollution abatement to minimize the impact of transportation projects, control of noxious weeds, aquatic noxious weeds, and establishment of native species.
