Term Description

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

A broad range of wireless and wire line communications-based information and electronics technologies. When integrated into the transportation system's infrastructure, and in vehicles themselves, these technologies allow operators, travelers and other vested parties the ability to receive specific traffic information where and when they need it; assist in relieving congestion; improve safety; and enhance productivity. The term ITS is used in two contexts. When used in the plural (the more usual form), ITS refers to the rapidly emerging transportation products, services and systems that are based on advanced technologies such as computers, communications, and electronics. When used in the singular, ITS refers to the currently evolving Intelligent Transportation System which integrates all modes of the existing transportation systems that move people and goods.
