Abstract
The OMC recognizes the overall goal of improving highway safety by reducing the number of commercial vehicle crashes using a comprehensive approach. This comprehensive approach to safety must consider all relevant factors and groups to develop effective safety programs consisting of effective enforcement, education, and training. The OMC strategic plan recognizes these elements to be critical to achieve the ultimate goal of voluntary compliance through partnerships among federal, state, and industry. A peer exchange of CMV drivers and industry educational, training, and outreach programs will assist in achieving that goal.
The peer exchange identified best practices related to state, industry, and OMC innovative outreach programs, training programs for CMV drivers and industry, roadside outreach activities, information material (such as brochures, handouts, manuals, pamphlets) distributed to CMV drivers and motor carriers, new and innovative technologies used to provide training and outreach to CMV and motor carriers, partnerships and coordination among state, federal, and industry to implement training and outreach program, and outreach programs targeted at other federal and state agencies, and industry groups.
The Utah Department of Transportation was the state host agency for the peer exchange, and was assisted by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University.
