Install and setup the PCMB according to the manufacturer's recommendations at locations shown on the work zone traffic control layout sheets. Relocate the PCMB as directed by the Engineer during the construction project. The Engineer will determine and program the displayed message. Return the PCMB to the ______ District storage yard when the Engineer determines they are no longer needed on the project. At no additional cost to the Department, repair or replace PCMB that become damaged during handling, transport, placement, or due to Contractor negligence. Normal or routine maintenance or damage resulting from crashes will be the responsibility of the Department. 06.07.2023 | 704-255 TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR SHOULDER DROP-OFF: If the shoulder and adjacent driving lane are not even at the end of the day, the following criteria will apply: Place the following sign assembly at the locations listed below. Sign Assembly: Sign No. W8-9a-48 "Shoulder Drop Off" and supplemental plate Sign No. W20-52P-54 to identify the distance. Locations:
If the difference in elevation between the shoulder and driving lane is less than 2", no slough is required. Sign assemblies will be measured and paid for according to Section 704 "Temporary Traffic Control". Use for all HBP projects with pavement thickness of 2" or greater for Spec Books Designed under the 2020 or 2022 Standard Specifications. Incorporated into the 2023 Standard Specifications. |

Provide beacons that are visible for a distance of 0.25 miles (1,320 feet) and are capable of operating for 20 days without a solar charge. Include all costs for materials, equipment, labor, and incidentals in the contract unit price for "Flashing Beacon". Use on 4 lane roadways for median crossovers, in conjunction with the applicable standard drawings. |
02.07.2017 | 704-301 SEQUENCING ARROW PANEL – TYPE C – CROSSOVER: Provide solar powered arrow panels that meet the requirements of the MUTCD and ITE and that are capable of operating for 20 days without a solar charge. Include all costs for materials, equipment, labor, and incidentals in the contract unit price for "Sequencing Arrow Panel – Type C – Crossover". Use on 4 lane roadways for median crossovers, in conjunction with the applicable standard drawings. |
08.05.2015 | 704-450 LANE CLOSURE - SIGNAL CONTROL/FLAGGING CONTROL: Install either the signal controlled lane closure on Standard D-704-16 or the flagging controlled lane closure on Standard D-704-17. Obtain an electrical source for traffic signals. Solar powered signals may be used. Place generators a minimum of 60 feet from the roadway centerline, unless the generator and signal are part of a trailer mounted unit. Place utility poles and equipment a minimum of 60 feet from the roadway centerline and place power conductors a minimum of 6 inches below the ground surface. Remove poles after they are no longer necessary. The Engineer will measure individual traffic control devices, other than the signal system and flaggers, shown on the standards. Payment will be made at the respective contract unit price. Include the cost of either a traffic signal system or flaggers in the contract unit price for "Lane Closure – Signal Control/Flagging Control". Use in conjunction with Standard Drawings D-704-16 and 17 when the contractor has the option of selecting the method of traffic control for the lane closure. |
08.06.2019 | 704-500 PORTABLE RUMBLE STRIPS (PRS): Use PRS made of rubber or engineered polymers. Install PRS as part of the temporary traffic control when the following signs are also part of the required traffic control set up:
Move rumble strips with the flagging operation. Do not place rumble strips on horizontal curves. The Engineer will count and measure each array as one unit. Include the cost of providing, installing, maintaining, and relocating PRS in the unit price bid for "Portable Rumble Strips". |

Choose to remove marking as specified in Section 704.04 N, "Obliteration of Pavement Markings" or mask markings. Mask markings using removable, non-reflective preformed tape that is approximately the same color as the pavement surface and that overlaps the marking a minimum of 1 inch on each side. Note is for use when masking is allowed as an option. Discuss with Traffic Safety Section and the District to determine what should be allowed for the project. |

01.11.2017 | 704-520 TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENT REPAIR: Provide traffic control consisting of a temporary lane closure and flagging. The maximum work zone length is six miles. The length of the work zone includes the daily construction area plus the longitudinal buffer space and does not include tapers. Lane closures may be less than six miles in length, dependent upon the overall length of the project. Two work zones are allowed but must be separated by a three mile gap. The gap is considered the distance between the sign reestablishing the normal speed limit after the first work zone and the reduced speed ahead sign for second lane closure. Place vertical panels on the roadway centerline adjacent to full depth repair areas. Place panels every 10 feet and use a minimum of two panels at each full depth repair area. Place Type I barricades in front of each full depth removal area. Position barricades so that they do not encroach into the traffic lane. The traffic control device list is based on two {#} mile lane closures and the following list:
Remove or shorten lane closures after new concrete has reached the required strength for opening to traffic specified in Section 570.04 A.1.b, "Full Depth Repairs". The Department will pay for all necessary deployed devices, regardless of the number and length of the lane closures. The maximum length of the work zones and the gap cannot be modified. This note is for CPR work performed on Interstate roadways under Sections 570 and 575. |

Quantities of Type I barricades and vertical panels are based on {#} full depth repair locations and 2 vertical panels per location. The Department will pay for additional barricades and panels at the contract unit price for the devices. Remove or shorten lane closures after new concrete has reached the required strength for opening to traffic specified in Section 570.04 A.1.b, "Full Depth Repairs". The length of the work zones and the gap cannot be modified. This note is for CPR work performed on 4-lane, Non-Interstate roadways under Sections 570 and 575. |
04.03.2020 | 704-900 ATTENUATION DEVICE TYPE B: Install either of the following attenuation devices:
Before installing devices, provide the Engineer a Certificate of Compliance stating that the devices meet NCHRP Report 350, MASH 2009, or MASH 2016, and a copy of an eligibility letter from FHWA. Use devices rated for the MPH designation used in the item description. Install devices according to the manufacturer's specifications. Liquid filled attenuators may not be deployed in any portion of the months of January, February, and December, nor before the 15th of March. If liquid filled attenuation devices are deployed after the 15th of March or in any portion of the months of April, October or November, include calcium magnesium acetate or potassium acetate in the liquid filled barrier solution. Mix the anti-icing chemicals with water as recommended by the anti-icing chemical manufacturer to protect the barrier from freezing to a temperature of 0°F. Contact the Engineer and the NDDOT Environmental and Transportation Services Division in the case of a spill leaving the roadway. Dispose of the mixture inside the device as specified in Section 107.17, "Removed Material". Provide a full replacement set of attenuators available to the project. If the replacement devices are installed, have a set of replacement devices available to the project within 3 calendar days. Immediately replace any damaged pieces. The Department will reimburse the Contractor for damaged pieces based on the invoice price plus 10 percent. All other costs associated with installing and maintaining replacement pieces will be at no additional cost to the Department. Consult with the Traffic Safety Section of the Design Division for the appropriate places to use this note. The use of liquid filled attenuators should be limited due to high maintenance costs. Use should be limited to locations when minimal space is available and sand filled drums may not fit. |

12.02.2014 | 762-050 PAVEMENT MARKING: If the Engineer and Contractor agree, plan quantity will be used as the measurement for payment for pavement marking items. Note for use when the pavement marking quantities are clearly defined and accurate. |
08.05.2015 | 762-150 PREFORMED PATTERNED PAVEMENT MARK - MESSAGE: Install messages a minimum of 2 weeks before the seal coat is applied. Immediately before sealing the area in which messages were placed, cover the markings with an adhesive coated paper liner. Install the liner as recommended by the pavement marking manufacturer. Apply spotting tabs to the ends of each liner. Remove the liner after the rolling operation has finished in the area the markings were covered. Dispose of liners as specified in Section 107.17, "Removed Material". Include the cost of covering markings and disposing of the liners in the contract unit price for "Preformed Patterned Pavement Mark – Message". Note should be used on seal projects when these types of markings are to be installed. |
10.16.2020 | 762-200 PERMANENT WATER BASED PAVEMENT MARKING: Replace the first paragraph of 762.04 C.2.a "Method of Application" with the following: Allow new bituminous treatment to cool to a temperature below 125 °F and cure for a period of 72 hours before applying permanent pavement marking. Use this note for Permanent Water Based Pavement Markings. Corrects a mistake in the 2020 Standard Specifications. This is for plans designed under the 2020 Standard Specifications Only. |
03.01.2024 | 762-210 PERMANENT WATER BASED PAVEMENT MARKING: Replace the first paragraph of 762.04 C.2.b "Rate of Application" with the following: Apply paint at a rate so that 1 gallon of paint will cover a 6 inch wide stripe for a length of 175 to 205 feet. Do not dilute paint, but the Engineer will allow a small quantity of naphtha thinner to flush out paint containers. Use this note for Permanent Water Based Pavement Markings. Updated to match the new standard of a 6 inch line for water based pavement markings. This is for plans designed under the 2020, 2022, and 2023 Standard Specifications only. |
