Klein, a full time farmer in the Elgin area in southwest North Dakota, has been active in the ND Grain Growers Association and the National Association of Wheat growers. He served on the NDGGA for nine years and was elected president in 1994. He served for 12 years on the ND Wheat Commission, holding the position of chair for seven of the twelve years. He retired from the Wheat Commission in 2012. During his tenure on the commission, he was involved with the Ag Rail Business Council for the BNSF railroad as one of two representatives from North Dakota. Klein has also been a member of the Southwest Grain Cooperative board of directors for 14 years, serving as chair for 12 of those years. Klein and his wife Sharon have one son, Joel, who recently returned to the family farm.
