Student of the Year Award
2002-2003 Recipient

Matthew Martimo

Martimo is finishing his M.S. in civil engineering at North Dakota State University. Matthew's research is on the development of trip generation rates for college campuses and grade schools to support travel demand modeling in small and medium sized cities. Since these cities rarely have traditional survey data he collected primary data through traffic counts at the schools and short surveys of students and parents. Martimo's work is being implemented as an enhancement in the travel demand model of the Fargo-Moorhead MPO and will potentially benefit other small and medium size MPOs.

Martimo has gained expertise in both traffic operations and transportation planning. He works with undergraduate students to learn how to use GIS, traffic analysis programs, simulation models, and travel demand modeling software. He also leads the development of software enhancements to traffic simulation models to allow users to conduct better analysis in less time and facilitates the extraction of model output effectively.

A native of Duluth, Minn., Martimo was able to attend college full time in lieu of his last two years of high school and received a high school diploma as well as A.A. and A.S. degrees in Business and Pre-Engineering in 1996. Martimo then enrolled in the undergraduate civil engineering program at NDSU in Fargo. He completed his B.S. degree and joined the graduate transportation program at NDSU in the spring of 2001. Martimo served as president of the ITE Student Chapter in 2001 and is active in local and regional transportation organizations.
