Kenneth Casavant

Kenneth Casavant is a professor in agricultural economics at Washington State University (WSU) and an adjunct professor at NDSU and the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute.

Casavant received his B.S. in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University in 1965. He also earned his M.S. in agricultural economics from NDSU in 1967. Casavant then went to WSU where he earned his Ph.D. in agricultural economics with an emphasis in transportation policy and marketing in 1971.

Casavant was associate director of the Washington State Transportation Center from 1984 to 1987. He has been a professor in agricultural economics at WSU since 1980. Casavant taught at several universities, including the University of Alaska and the University of New England in Australia.

His research interests include transportation economics and policy, and international trade and marketing. During his teaching career he taught on agricultural economics and management, agricultural marketing, and policy.

Casavant has conducted research in other countries on transportation policy, developed marketing plans for non-traditional crops and recommended investments to countries with poor transportation systems. Over the past 20 years he conducted research and evaluated transportation systems, investment, management and infrastructure in Zimbabwe, Australia, Portugal, New Zealand, Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador, Sierra Leone and Mali.

Casavant has been asked to testify before congressional and state legislatures on the needs and policy alternatives for transportation. His expertise is also sought by international trade agencies, state and national commodity groups, legal firms, and by private railroad and trucking firms on issues ranging from development of intelligent transportation system applications to logistical designs for port distribution systems.

Casavant was selected to give a Distinguished Faculty Address at WSU, received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Western Agricultural Economics Association in 2003, and received the best paper award from the 2006 European Applied Business Conference in Florence, Italy. He also was named the 1990 Faculty of the Year Award at WSU and the National Outstanding Teacher Award from the National Association of Colleges and Teachers in Agriculture in 1983.
