Dr. Ihsan holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, and a master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), Pakistan. He earned his Ph.D. in Transportation and Logistics from North Dakota State University, where his research was driven by Vision Zero—focused on eliminating road fatalities and injuries. He has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, and has been invited as a speaker at prestigious conferences such as the Transportation Research Board, ATSIP Traffic Records Forum, and Lifesavers. With over seven years of expertise in road safety, transportation planning, statistical modeling, and traffic operations, Dr. Ihsan has conducted numerous impactful studies. His notable work includes the Tribal reservations crash data utilization, the commercial motor vehicle rural crash prevention dashboard, and research on crash hotspot analysis, traffic enforcement, and injury severity factors. Dr. Ihsan's work showcases his proficiency in research design, data analysis, and results interpretation in the field of transportation safety.

Recent Research Activities/Major Programs of Activity

  • Hotspot analysis and machine learning prediction of single vehicle lane departure crashes on rural roads in North Dakota.
  • Determining the impact of overtime traffic enforcement activities on seatbelt and impaired driving related serious and fatal injury crashes. Also, the identification of counties with potential to reduce serious crashes in North Dakota.
  • Investigation of risk factors in survival among a subpopulation of drivers in North Dakota's 24/7 Sobriety Program
  • Investigation of the confounding effects of factors on injury severity for all occupants in fatal single-vehicle rollover crashes.
  • Development of a crash prediction model for highway rail grade crossings with respect to contributing factors.
