Research Will Help Identify Best Approaches for Eco-Driving in CAVs
Posted: Mar 18, 2025
Researchers at Colorado State University studied various approaches to eco-driving in connected autonomous vehicles to learn how best to evaluate the methods for energy economy. Eco-driving is a strategy designed to reduce fuel consumption by minimizing accelerations and unnecessary braking events. The strategy can be employed by human drivers, but will be more broadly and uniformly implemented in autonomous vehicles. The researchers found that autonomous eco-driving controls can significantly enhance vehicle energy economy with an 11% national impact on energy savings if widely adopted. Their research recommends the use of a genetic algorithm method with a road power cost function as the best trade-off for generating optimal eco-driving strategies for urban battery electric vehicles.
