Plant-Based Asphalt Binder Improves Pavement Performance

Research shows a plant-based binder developed at South Dakota State University can improve the performance of asphalt pavement mixes. Addition of cellulose nanofibers resulted in an overall improvement in binder-aggregates adhesion, an asphalt binder with a higher fracture energy and dynamic viscosity, and an asphalt mix with a higher resistance to rutting, cracking, and moisture-induced damage. The researchers say that the use of the product will reduce the need for petroleum-based products and, because of biomaterial availability and low cost, may significantly reduce pavement costs.
