UGPTI Coordinates Production of Truck Safety PSAs

Posted: Jul 12, 2024

UGPTI recently partnered with WDAY radio to produce a series of truck safety public service announcements to be broadcast on WDAY affiliates, including its American Ag Network stations, across North Dakota.

The announcements were initially broadcast in June and will resume later this summer as trucking activity ramps up during harvest. There radio spots were produced as a part of a Rural Truck Safety Education and Outreach Partnership Demonstration Project funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration. Production of the public service announcements was funded by the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association Foundation, Dixon Insurance, True North Compliance Services, the Fargo-Moorhead Transportation Club.

PSAs include:

  • Leah Kelm, Vision Zero Regional Coordinator, discusses driving defensively and staying alert, particularly around large trucks.
  • Kelly Krapu, of the ND Motor Carriers Association and the FM Transportation Club, highlights blind spots around trucks, commonly called the “No Zone.”
  • Ryan Panasuk, Lieutenant with the North Dakota Highway Patrol, notes that large vehicles require extra caution, planning ahead, driving at appropriate speeds and properly securing loads.
  • Jackie Anderson, research specialist at UGPTI, urges caution around large trucks and suggests giving them extra space to maneuver.
  • Paul Mueller, a farmer from Cummings, ND, reminds drivers to be cautious around farm equipment and farmers to stay alert, get enough rest and train their team for safety.
  • Kaitlin Atkinson, Vision Zero Regional Coordinator says drivers should stay vigilant for farm equipment as well as mud and debris and farmers should assure the visibility of their trucks and equipment and make sure loads are secured.
  • Kelly Bengtson, road and bridge engineer with UGPTI, offers tips for sharing the road with farm equipment.
