Research Shows CAVs Will Likely Improve Safety Under Various Roadway Designs

Posted: Apr 24, 2023

Research at the University of Utah shows that introducing connected automated vehicles (CAVs) into traffic flow can elevate safety performance, especially on freeways. CAV adoption will likely reduce rear-end and lane-change crashes. Similarly, less speed variation among vehicles and fewer unexpected decelerations will reduce crash severity. The mix of CAVs and traditional vehicles will influence the magnitude of safety increases. The research will help roadway designers and transportation system designers adapt roadway systems to the emergence of CAVs.
