Data on Tack Coats Provide Guidance for Improving Pavement Strength and Durability

Posted: Sep 1, 2022

Researchers at South Dakota State University are developing a database to help pavement engineers select the best types and application rates of tack coats, the asphalt-based material applied between pavement layers to improve structural performance. In particular, they are looking at the resulting shear strength between the layers. Pavement failures, particularly in South Dakota and other northern states, have been traced to reduced shear strength resulting from insufficient or excessive tack coat applications and moisture penetration in the interface of pavement layers.
