Analytical Model Will Improve Designs for Extending Concrete Life

Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver developed an analytical model that can be used to improve repair technique designs for concrete suffering from a common reaction between aggregate and Portland cement that can damage and weaken concrete over time. The researchers studied 120 concrete cylinders cast with and without confinement by carbon-fiber reinforced polymer using two types of aggregates to represent variable levels of alkali-silica reaction. The structural responses of the plain and confined concrete specimens were examined with an emphasis on load-carrying capacity, toughness, and failure characteristics. An analytical model was developed to complement the experimental findings and to propose design recommendations.
