Researchers Develop Commute Optimization System to Reduce Environmental Impacts
Posted: Jun 30, 2021
Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver developed an innovative system that can identify commute solutions to reduce negative environmental impacts of business commuting. The Multi-Business Commute Optimization System (MBCOS) consists of three integrated components: a website (www.commuteopt.com), a travel attributes model, and a multi-objective optimization model. Case study results indicate that widespread adoption of the system could result in a 9.3% reduction in business-related emissions and a 4% reduction in VMT in Colorado within three to six years. Drive-alone commuters are significant contributors to the challenges facing the U.S. transportation sector. Those challenges include greenhouse gas and air pollution emission increases, parking facility costs, congestion, and energy consumption.
