Researcher Wins NDSU Faculty Lectureship Award

Dinesh Katti, professor of civil and environmental engineering and MPC researcher at North Dakota State University, will receive the 2020 NDSU Faculty Lectureship Award. The honor is one of the oldest and most prestigious of the university's awards and recognizes sustained professional excellence in teaching, scholarly achievement, and service. Katti will receive a $2,500 award and will be recognized at NDSU's Celebration of Excellence Event September 1.

Katti was nominated by David Steward, professor and chair of civil and environmental engineering, and Michael Kessler, dean of the College of Engineering. "Professor Katti is internationally renowned for pioneering methods of computational mechanics and modeling to discovery of the origin of material properties, especially nanoscale materials," they said. "Professor Dinesh Katti is a true leader who has demonstrated excellence in all three areas of teaching, research and service."

In his research, Katti has made important contributions to describing the mechanisms of swelling in clay and the creation of swelling pressure on infrastructure. He was the first to introduce the use of molecular-level phenomena to understand swelling of clays in civil engineering. He has been recognized with many awards. Katti's vita lists three books, 10 book chapters, more than 190 research papers, and more than 30 invited talks. As an MPC researcher, Katti is the principal investigator for MPC project 548, Development of Models for the Prediction of Shear Strength of Swelling Clays.
