MPC MPC Research Helps Improve Use of Local Road Base Materials

MPC research at the University of Wyoming provides WYDOT, as well as other transportation agencies nationwide, the necessary models to estimate resilient modulus (a measurement of material stiffness under various conditions) of granular crushed road base materials. Understanding this characteristic is essential to economical and long-lasting pavement design. A comprehensive resilient modulus test program was completed by following the WYDOT modified American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ testing protocol (AASHTO T 307), which incorporates WYDOT design and testing practices. Results from this study are intended for the roadway conditions, base materials, and construction practices in Wyoming, but the methodology of testing and statistical analysis can be adopted by other departments of transportation. This research will enhance pavement design efficiency and facilitate the full implementation of Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, a national resource for pavement design, in Wyoming.
